It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD They lifted up their voices, accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and musical instruments, in praise to the LORD: “For He is good His loving devotion endures forever.” And the temple, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise and thank the LORD with one voice. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments, they raised their voices and praised the LORD with these words: “He is good! His faithful love endures forever!” At that moment a thick cloud filled the Temple of the LORD.Īnd it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the LORD ), and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the LORD, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever,” the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, The trumpeters and singers performed together in unison to praise and give thanks to the LORD. In a striking parallel to their own selves, she and Janeway's character argue on the course of action until Janeway pulls rank and orders her to stop, instead going to buy components for a radio so they can gather more information for the Allied High Command. However, Seven is tired of playing along with the Nazis and wants to prepare to fight. Seven's character is a munitions expert and an able singer, needed by the Resistance. Janeway's character is the leader of the Resistance cell in Sainte Claire, with Tuvok's character as her right-hand man. When the café is closed, it serves as a secret base for the Resistance. Katrine doesn't know what that means, but Karr dismisses it and leaves her with a toast, "to the hunt" (for the Resistance). Turanj comes back to announce a problem that the warp plasma network has become unstable. Karr plays the character well, and announces his intentions to intercept Resistance forces who are sure to arrive. Katrine asks that they "keep the war outside" like she tells all her guests. Katrine comes to talk to Karr, exchanging introductions. Turanj is immediately eager to hunt and destroy the Voyager crew as prey, but Karr tells him to "play the game" and to leave when he starts to harass Seven's character. He had worked under Rommel in Africa and Schmidt in Poland. Karr's character is of a Nazi Standartenführer newly assigned to oversee the city's occupation. ( Listen to Seven sing "It Can't Be Wrong" file info) Karr and the Beta Hirogen, Turanj visit the café, both dressed in Nazi uniform. The first scene of the French simulation begins with Seven singing " It Can't Be Wrong". Seven of Nine, or Mademoiselle de Neuf as she is called in the simulation, is a lounge singer, Janeway, or Katrine, is the café owner, and Tuvok is the bartender. They are running a café, Le Coeur de Lion, but are secretly working for the French Resistance, while the Hirogen are working alongside the Nazis. There, Janeway, Seven of Nine, Neelix, Tuvok and B'Elanna Torres are put in a simulation of the Nazi occupation of Sainte Claire, France. After she is treated in sickbay, she is sent to a simulation of World War II. Karr has found a new program to try, and has Janeway transferred to Holodeck 1 this time. He is briefly concerned with the possibility that Janeway might be partly resisting the effects of the neural interface, but the medic insists he's been monitoring and nothing is wrong. The Alpha Hirogen, Karr, oversees Janeway being treated by a medic from her injury in Holodeck 2. The wounded are treated in sickbay and then sent back to the holodeck to be hunted again. The Hirogen hunt the Voyager crew over and over again in various simulations. While half of the crew have been imprisoned and forced into slave labor running the ship for their captors, others have been fitted with a neural interface that makes them believe they actually are the characters in the holodeck program. USS Voyager has been commandeered by the Hirogen and they are using the holodecks to hunt the crew in various simulations with the safety protocols deactivated. Using a Starfleet combadge, he calls sickbay to tell them that Janeway needs medical attention. A Hirogen, also dressed in Klingon garb, interrupts the battle and stabs her. Captain Kathryn Janeway, altered to look like a Klingon, battles several other Klingons. But if you still don’t hear sound, it’s likely that Windows Update couldn’t find the right driver. Image-Line offers lifetime free upgrades to FL Studio users, meaning that all existing users of the software now automatically own upgrades to version 20 on both platforms.Īnd the updates just keep on coming: version 20.5 brought in Flex, a new preset-based soft synth, while 20.6 added a variety of new features. Pleasingly, licenses are shared between both Mac and PC versions. The headline feature in version 20 was a native 64-bit Mac version, meaning that FL Studio can now be used on macOS (as well as PC) without the need for a clunky workaround. Originally launched as FruityLoops, Image-Line's DAW holds near-iconic status for a certain generation of producers, particularly in the hip-hop and EDM realms. It retains its place at the cutting edge of DAW technology. While some of the changes might require a little getting used to for veterans, Ableton has again managed to enhance Live’s capabilities without adding bloat to its famously streamlined workflow. There are new devices, too, along with updates for existing ones. The long-awaited Live 11 takes things to the next level, adding much-requested features such as an elegant comping system and support for MPE. Since then, it's exploded in popularity and influenced the development of countless other desktop and mobile apps. When the first version was released in 2001 it threw out the traditional design rulebook and established itself not just as a recording program for composers, but also as a performance instrument in itself. It's hard to overstate the impact that Live has had on the music software marketplace. Latest update doesn't feel as essential as the last few versions -Plugin delay compensation is still an issue for a few of the effects
In hindsight, it is easy to say that warning signals were missed, that we suffered from collective amnesia, that we were seduced by the efficiency gains of better-integrated markets, or that powerful interests prevailed while those of the median worker were largely ignored. And third, a failure to deal with worsening inequality threatens to undermine the socio-political fabric of countries, affecting the governability of nations. Second, it can inhibit the positive contributions of what is being dubbed the Fourth Industrial Revolution – that is, gains in technology which have the potential for enhancing global welfare. Why is this a problem? First, it encourages a backlash against globalisation that can actually make most worse off (viz. I believe that inclusive economic growth is currently at risk in many countries. My aim in this policy brief is to examine what went wrong, what was swept under the rug, and where governments have failed in dealing with globalisation. Some, like Dani Rodrik (2011), have argued that there is an inconsistency among hyper-globalisation, national economic interests, and democracy, and recent political developments on both sides of the Atlantic support this view. This discontent has turned progressively into frustration and anger, and we now hear loud complaints about the course of globalisation. While the net gains still prevail from both phenomena, the process for compensating losers has been inadequate, and in some contexts largely foregone (see Estache and Leipziger 2009 for an early warning). New technology has enabled many to increase access to seemingly free information and to connect to the new and expanding global digital economy, while for others it has meant job losses and retrenchment. Accompanying the process of globalisation was a process of technological advancement. Although it is difficult to do a thorough net cost-benefit analysis of globalisation, it clearly enabled many in the developing world to increase their incomes, and many in the advanced economies to consume more at lower prices. Yet, the benefits incurred costs as well. In this clamour for greater connectivity, issues of the distribution of the gains from globalisation were largely ignored, except in the work of some, like Joseph Stiglitz, largely because gains were large and benefitted many on both sides of the transaction. Indeed, globalisation has been responsible for large increases in world trade, fluid flows of capital seeking higher returns, imports of final products at lower cost to consumers, jobs and escapes out of poverty for hundreds of millions, and profits for the business community in both advanced and emerging market economies. With globalisation, we have seen the traditional barriers to trade and finance progressively lowered, and in this process, many have gained. I’ve seen experienced teams convinced that they are all on the same page about their codes, but when given the task of developing a codebook in a systematic way, they find they often have different understandings of what they mean by common terms. It helps to clarify codes and what you mean when you apply them to your data not only to yourself, but also to your team members and supervisory staff. your examiners!) and create a process that is repeatable? How do you decide what is included in a node and what is not? How would you describe your process to someone else (i.e. I find that most of us are not very articulate about what we mean by each of the codes we are using to investigate the data. It just seems too hard doesn’t it?īelieve me, the tedious work is well worth it! But often we don’t document these in detail. We often feel we have clear conceptualizations of what we mean by different codes related to our data. thematic analysis) we believe we need to do an adequate, and hopefully even good analysis of the data we often struggled many months or years to collect. We all approach our data with the best of intentions, equipping ourselves with the tools (e.g. I have seen how it helps to fix some of the challenges that researches face when coding qualitative data. This article has become my research bible. The topic of a codebook came to my immediate attention when I read the article “ Developing and Using a Codebook for the Analysis of Interview Data: An Example from a Professional Development Research Project” by DeCuir-Gunby, Marshall and McCulloch, which was published in the Field Methods journal in 2010. (Thanks QSR for inviting me to write this post!) Every single researcher I have discussed this with (and they are now in the hundreds) has found some benefit in this, so I had to share it with you. I originally began writing this blog post about teamwork and my recent experiences in seeing how important it is to clarify the definitions of codes when working in teams.īut I now realize that such advice applies to all researchers, in all disciplines, studying all manner of topics. If you use two or more explanatory variables to predict the dependent variable, you deal with multiple linear regression. Simple linear regression models the relationship between a dependent variable and one independent variables using a linear function. In statistics, they differentiate between a simple and multiple linear regression. The goal of a model is to get the smallest possible sum of squares and draw a line that comes closest to the data. Technically, a regression analysis model is based on the sum of squares, which is a mathematical way to find the dispersion of data points. Regression analysis helps you understand how the dependent variable changes when one of the independent variables varies and allows to mathematically determine which of those variables really has an impact. Independent variables (aka explanatory variables, or predictors) are the factors that might influence the dependent variable. In statistical modeling, regression analysis is used to estimate the relationships between two or more variables:ĭependent variable (aka criterion variable) is the main factor you are trying to understand and predict. The film’s ‘Skynet’ complex was also built. The spectacular destruction is a dizzying mix of CGI, real streets in the industrial area east of downtown, and a street set built at the old – recently demolished – Rockwell Defense Plant, at Bellflower and Imperial Highway in Downey, where sets for Spider-Man were constructed. and beneath which the T-1000 appeared in Terminator 2, but since demolished). The road chase with the giant crane, though, is back downtown, roaring north from Boyle Heights, across the Sixth Street Bridge (seen in S.W.A.T. The ‘Emery Animal Hospital’, and the adjoining ‘United Rentals’ branch, were sets built on the 7500 block of Foothill Boulevard, Sunland, close to the filming locations for much of Christopher Nolan’s Memento. The real John Connor ( Nick Stahl), when not working on a building site alongside the Harbor Freeway at Wilshire Boulevard, downtown, is moping about on the First Street Bridge over the LA River, to the east.īut when he feels the need for drugs, he heads way north, to the San Fernando Valley. The bar, which has also been seen in Deep Impact, Twins and La Bamba, is the place – so it’s claimed – where you might find William Shatner line-dancing. In reality, the raucous bar, where the Terminator takes the leathers of the male stripper is the Cowboy Palace Saloon, 21635 Devonshire Street at Owensmouth Avenue, Chatsworth, up in the northwest of the Valley. The clunky old T-800 ( Arnold Schwarzenegger) materialises in the Valley again, conveniently close to Ladies’ Night at the ‘Desert Star’. The fast food bar where she shoots the hapless burger-flipper is Jim’s, 1901 East First Street at State Street, Boyle Heights, east of downtown Los Angeles. In Culver City, she takes the cop’s gun, and her mission to wipe out John Connor’s future lieutenants takes her across downtown to the somewhat less glamorous Boyle Heights. Whereas male Terminators materialise in tough areas such as LA’s scuzzy downtown or the California desert, the T-X Terminatrix ( Kristanna Loken) goes all girlie, and materialises in a Rodeo Drive shop window, at the glitzy complex, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills.īut it’s not glitz all the way. The third movie is always a problem ( Godfather Part III, Spider-Man 3.), and without James Cameron at the helm, T3 doesn’t buck the trend. Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines filming location: the terminatrix materialises in a shop window: Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills McManus also picks newer prisoners, ones that don't have life sentences, to add to the mix and to give them a shot at rehabilitation. The inmates of Em City are some of the most brutal offenders in the entire penitentiary - McManus insists that these are the prisoners to try to reach. Managed by a true prison reform zealot, Tim McManus, Em City is for many prisoners the only hope in their lives. He gets assigned to "Em" City (Emerald City), an experimental unit in Oz the goal of Em City is to try a different living environment, one that might give the prisoners a chance at changing their lives and possibly rehabilitate them. Everything that you could imagine happening in a prison setting happens, and probably a lot you wouldn't imagine. His journey through Oz is basically the rest of the series, and it's certainly no yellow brick road he follows. Because Beecher is a lawyer, the court decides to make an example of him and sends him to maximum security at Oswald Penitentiary. Beecher has committed vehicular manslaughter while driving drunk. At the end of almost every episode you'll probably find yourself muttering "This is SUCH a good show!" Although it is ostensibly the story of a prison and its many prisoners, 'Oz' can be viewed as primarily the story of one man, Tobias Beecher. The stories are both filled with detail and minutiae, and also have overarching moral tales and "big picture" flow. It's also wildly creative, beautifully filmed, brilliantly acted (with very few exceptions) and has a great framing device. OK, it's violent and bloody and vicious and cruel. and ties everything together really nicely. The whole thing is narrated and held together by inmates Augustus Hill, who provides the show with some context, some sense of theme, etc. Nathan), a nun/psychologist (Sister Peter Marie), a bunch of guards some honest, some crooked and of course the warden Leo Glynn. Besides the regular inmates, there's guest stars such as Method Man, Luke Perry, Master P, Treach, etc. And there's a great "everyman" character called Beecher who gives a good look at a normal man who made one tragic mistake. There's the gangstas (Adebisi, Wangler, Redding, Poet, Keene, Supreme Allah), Muslims (Said, Arif, Hamid Khan), Italians (Pancamo, Nappa, Schiebetta), bikers (Hoyt), Aryans (Schillinger, Robson, Mark Mack), Christians (Cloutier, Cudney), Latinos (Alvarez, Morales, Guerra, Hernandez), gays (Hanlon, Cramer) and a whole pile of others (the O'Riley brothers, Keller, Stanislovsky, etc.). There have been many groups of inmates during the run of the show and not everybody makes it out alive. OZ chronicles the attempts of McManus (Terry Kinney) to keep control over the inmates of Em(erald) City as well as the drug trade and the violence.
